Stereo Space
Objective
STEREO SPACE LAB brings Architecture into IDAS Design Management Research Curriculum.Architecture is a timeless balance of Art and Technology, concept and function.
STERO SPACE LAB manages space to define multiple points of view: you need space to produce an angle and gain perspective. Space helps you move around and away from Stereo-Types, pre-concepts, cultural limitations.
“Stereo” means “solid. deep” and alludes to the dual source of deep sound.
Using space you will be able to manage the experience of products, services, media and mobility.
Architecture will give you the frame, the wall and the windows, a garden or a prison, a theatre or a square.
Managing space is the ultimate control tool, from real estate to rogue state, from mobility to brand experience, from spiritual spaces (tombs, temples, monuments) to power spaces (flagship stores, palaces, landmarks).
1) DESIGN AT ANY SCALE
We work on Korean Architecture, Korean Furniture, Korean Products, Korean Media, Korean Crafts, Korean Pop Culture, we filter it with Italian Style and we share it with the world via International platforms as the New York Times, Arirang TV, TBS Radio, KBS, SBS, the Venice Biennale, from the Middle East to New England, From the UK to Africa, From Hawaii to Australia. link to interview during the 2014 Australian Architecture Lecture tour (Melbourne, Brisbane Sidney, Perth:

The Stereophonic effect come from a slight difference between what you hear from your left and right ears (L=Left and R=Right) this difference generates depth, the 3rd dimension, the word “Stereo” comes from greek and it means SOLID.
3) EAST KOREA, INTERNATIONAL
STEREO LAB looks at the Korean potential as a united-nation and a connected inter-nation. Looking at the view from East Korea (Japan and the Pacific) to the Far East (the Americas) and from West Korea (China and Asia) to the Far West (Europe and Africa) and keeping it cool (Antartica?) STEREOtypes are made from casts or molds, STEREO LAB will forge originals.
4) STEREO IS THE NEW SMART
HONGIK STEREO LAB is Simone Carena’s International Design Lab in IDAS. It is the evolution of 2011 SMART CITY LAB and it is deeply rooted in the 17 years research done between IDAS and MOTOElastico.com, the Best Italian architecture office in Korea.
STEREO Lab, formerly known as Smart City Lab, worked on multiple scenarios following are some examples:
The IDAS-MIT International workshop: for the first time in Seoul, MIT Senseable City Lab worked with 60 of our students in a workshop on big data. We explored the Norianjin area of Intensive learning institutes. A selected group of students continued the research work at MIT in Boston. Students were led by 5 very energetic MIT researchers and had a chance to explore our city and Boston with a unique field trip that gave us access to the core of the MIT. The STEREO LAB mission is to share Seoul incredible potential with the best of the Americas link to video and images at https://www.facebook.com/IdasMitInternationalWorkshop/
The IDAS-Kingston University London cooperation ran from 2010 to 2016 with multiple design research topics about “the future of” The future of food culminated on a gala-dinner-exhibition at Dana Centre, inside the London Natural History Museum. Our Lab set up the IDAS installations and could experience samples of future foods from Kingston University, RCA and the Imperial College. IDAS and Kingston University continued cooperation for FUTURE of Classrooms, Ageing, Family, Entertainment for many semesters together with IDAS Professor Boyeun Kim. The STEREO LAB goal is to bring IDAS potential to the best of Europe
The Dotjari project at the Venice Architecture Biennale: 12 IDAS students, directed by Professor Simone Carena, were invited by the Korean Pavilion at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale. The theme :“Fundamentals” fitted well the Dotjari as foundation of Korean space: one Pyung (3 sqm), the scale for living for one person. It is a measure of space and a very thin furniture. A urban furniture. IDAS Scenario Class developed a series of performances of space-sharing and spacemeasuring using dotjari in Seoul, Venice and in the spaces in between (airports, stopovers). Students could develop ideas, graphic interface, performance, shooting, editing and sightseeing while being invited to participate to one of the most prestigious events in the world. The target of STEREO Lab is to contribute to the international effort for good design and The 2012 Korean Pavilion was the winner of the gold prize. link to https://www.facebook.com/2014dotjari/
